Sex ed 101: parenting with courage and confidence
Developing wisdom and courage to talk to kids honestly and openly about human sexuality
Suggested time: 90 minutes
Target Audience: Adults in any setting - private gathering, parent/caregiver groups, school communities, private organizations
An interactive, informative discussion on how to become the go to adult in a kid’s life, for all things puberty and sexual health. Did some of the words in that first sentence make you cringe? Then you’ve come to the right place! You might start the workshop feeling a little (or alot) uncomfortable but you’ll leave with a new found confidence that you are the best resource for your kids. Let’s not leave their education up to the internet and their friends! Come learn how to impart facts and share your values when it comes to your kids’ changing bodies and minds.
What makes an adult trustworthy and approachable?
Why is it important to get there first (before friends/Internet beat you to the punchline)?
What’s a fact vs. a value? How do you share the truth and also your sense of right and wrong?
Finding teachable moments and answering those questions that throw you for a loop (especially when you had no idea they knew that)?
National and state sexual health education standards. What topics are recommended at what grade levels?
Has it been a long time since the football coach taught you sex ed?
Note: This is NOT a discussion about whether sexuality education should or should not be taught. It is a discussion about why it SHOULD be taught and all the roles people/organizations can play. If you want to voice your dissent about sex ed in school, please contact your legislator.
