Though sexually explicit material is available with a single click 24/7, there is still fierce opposition to teaching comprehensive sexuality education. Research study after research study shows that when kids are offered medically accurate, age appropriate, culturally responsive, trauma informed health education, that is not fear or shame-based, they develop the skills they need to be confident communicators, decision makers and problem solvers. So, let's not leave kids' sex ed up to their friends and the media. If families, schools and the community work together to get youth the information they need - mission accomplished!

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY OR TOO LATE TO START A CONVERSATION.
How do we - the parent, caregiver or teacher - know what is appropriate for each age? Here are our biggest clues: listen to their questions, note the media and music they are consuming, overhear their conversation with friends, and tune-in to their attitudes. If we keep kids’ questions and curiosity at the center of our instruction, they’ll tell us what they are being exposed to and where we might need to throw in some information, course correct and add some guidance. We can bolster our knowledge by looking to national guidelines and state educational standards - tools written with collective expertise that help guide age-appropriate conversation. Marrying your family’s values to the facts gives kids the knowledge, skills and moral compass to find their way. Talking to kids about sexual health doesn't have to be scary.
